Daniel Sims

Daniel Sims is a trumpet player with varied musical experience. Mr. Sims is currently studying with Phil Elkins of the Greenville and Macon Symphonies. He began his performance studies at the Shenandoah Conservatory of Winchester, Virginia. At the Conservatory he received his first trumpet lessons from Christopher Tranchitella of he National Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Sims also performed with the Shenandoah Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, the Shenandoah Conservatory Wind Ensemble, and the Shenandoah Conservatory Jazz Ensemble. He also did work with the Harbinger Brass Quintet and played with the pit orchestra in the Conservatory’s production of Kurt Weill’s Three Penny Opera. Earlier this year Mr. Sims performed a recital that included works of Alexander Arutunian, Georges Enesco, and Alexander Goedicke.

Upon moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 1991, Mr. Sims studied with Larry Black and Jim Thompson of the Atlanta Symphony. In 1992 he won the second prize in the college solo division of the “First Annual Young Artists Brass Competition” sponsored by the Atlanta Brass Society, Inc. The panel judges were all members of the Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet. In his 1992 solo recital with accompanist Bess Cunningham, Mr. Sims’ recital included excerpts from George Phillip Telemann’s “Heroic Music,” Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Suite En Si Mineur” and Alexander Arutunian’s Trumpet Concerto. The years following Mr. Sims performed with the Emory Community Brass Ensemble for two seasons.

Mr. Sims studied with Bill Denton of the Navy School of Music of Norfolk, Virginia. After completing the school at Norfolk, Virginia in 1989, Mr. Sims moved to New York City where he performed for two seasons as a soloist with the 26th Army Band of New York City. This group performed concert series throughout New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey and had television appearances including a performance on the “Regis and Cathy Lee Show.” Mr. Sims was also featured as a trumpet player in the children’s book, “What Instrument is This?” written by Rosmarie Hausherr. While in New York City he studied with Dominic Derasse of the 92nd Street Y of New York.
