Advanced Photography

This course will be very much hands on. Classes will be held at the studio of Blackshear Photography in Griffin. Each week will cover a different aspect of photography. When working with people, we will bring in models and each student will be able to make their own images. There will be a few guest speakers who are working photographers and specialize in different fields. There will be opportunities for members of the class to be able to serve the community using their photography skills during the course of the class.

The goal of the class is to advance the students in their photography skills and improve their final images. The entire photography workflow from the creation to the final images will be addressed. We will use Photoshop as well as other software packages.

This class will be tailored to the more advanced photographer. Basic concepts will be reviewed. Students will the option to purchase a textbook in the class. The main requirement is to have a passion for photography and a desire to learn. The class will conclude with a gallery of all the student’s best work.

An Introduction to Painting for Beginners

Expand your creative world while learning the basics of acrylic painting. Acrylics are the versatile medium that can mimic both watercolors, when used thinly, or can look like oils, when used thickly. Learn the elements of design, color mixing, brushstroke, "shading" and much more. Personal creativity and experimentation will always be encouraged. The class will be held in a relaxed and non-competitive atmosphere. No previous experience with painting is necessary. Perfect for interested beginners. Join this studio class and become a PAINTER!!

Beginner’s Watercolor Painting

The Beginner’s Watercolor Painting Class is introduced with different materials for watercolor painting, including paper, paint, brushes, and its related products available in the market. All the major watercolor painting techniques are demonstrated : methods for laying, washes, preserving white areas, glazing, various brush strokes, establishing form, lifting color, masking, using resists, negative painting, and creating textural effects- --including sprinkling, spattering, stencils, pouring, squirting, or stamping paint. The instructions include design concepts of line and shape, light and dark, perspective, colors, and composition. The class explores on the subject matters of simple forms, still-life, and landscape, with simple exercises.

Materials needed for the first class: #4 round brush, ½” flat brush (optional), watercolor paper, water container, watercolor paints, palette. Only are the minimum materials required for the first class. After the instructor explains the differences among different watercolor painting tools and materials for the first class, the students would have a better understanding and idea about the materials and how to choose them.

Intermediate & Advanced Watercolor Painting

The Intermediate & Advanced Watercolor Painting Class is instructed with fresh perspectives, open doors, and creativity-expanding ways to help take students’ work to the next level. Students choose their own subject matters, based on their experiences and interests, along with the tips and suggestions given by the instructor to create vivid paintings infused with students’ own style and creativity. The instruction focuses on each student’s needs and pace, with the discovery of new ways to get expressive with colors and shapes and improve the areas they had encountered before. Students would also learn to expand their repertoire and unleash their creativity by exchanging their experiences with others, with other innovative techniques, as well as traditional watercolor techniques.

Introduction to Art Media

This fun, interesting, and versatile class is designed to introduce basic elements of art in general and fundamental techniques in three subjects: drawing, watercolor, and acrylic painting. The instruction of art elements includes line and shape, light and dark, colors, perspectives, and design compositions. This class teaches the students all the essentials of each medium and inspires them to go on to master more complex techniques. Wide range of different art techniques is introduced: continuous line drawing, cross-hatching, tonal effects, and pointillism for drawing not only in black-and-white but also in color in different media; methods for laying, washes, various brush strokes, establishing form, lifting color, masking, negative painting, and creating textural effects by sprinkling, spattering, pouring, and squirting for watercolor; underpainting, glazing, impasto, and scraping, and many different effects created from washes and glazes to exciting textural finishes for acrylic painting.

Young Art

The class emphasizes young artists’ ability to create, view, interpret, and appreciate art by painting and drawing using special techniques with pencil, paint, and markers, as well as building, folding, and carving 3-dimensional projects. The students will learn about classic art and craft through art activities that nurture their creativity. The motivating lessons guide them through basic art concepts, techniques, and creative projects, such as line, shape, color, space, texture, form, and value. Many projects utilize styles and techniques of famous artists with suggestions that expose the students to their works while in a fun and creative environment they are in.

Paper Art, Origami, & Cards Making

Not only do the young artists develop their artistic skills through this class, but also improve their fine motor skills and problem-solving skills. Acquiring fine craftsmanship, young artists learn composition and design, work with color and texture, and plan symmetry versus abstract design. To name a few, they would make paper waste basket/container and paper sculpture mobile, engineer pop-up cards, plan peek-a-boo window cards, invent board games and dot-to-dot puzzles. Most of the supplies that are needed for these projects are easily found in the home.

Beginning Drawing

Yes, you can draw! This fun and informative course will have you discovering talents you were unaware you possessed! Drawing is seen as a vehicle for thinking, seeing, and communicating. Formal elements of line, value, shape, texture, and space are worked individually and in common. This course will focus on developing your observation and drawing skills, so that you become comfortable recording and expressing information visually. This course offers the student a fundamental knowledge of drawing media, technique, methods, and terminology. Use of pencil, charcoal, conte crayon, and pastel will be implemented in this course to show your creativity through black and white as well as color.

Beginning Photography

Want to learn the tricks of the trade that professional photographers use to get such great photographs? Come join this class and learn how to master common areas of digital photography such as shooting people, landscapes, wildlife, sporting events, indoor events, weather, night photographs, travel, city life, flowers, close-ups and abstract photographs. This course will begin by discussing the different computer equipment options, how your camera works, how to organize your photographs on your computer, and how to edit your photographs to get the best images possible. It will further discuss trouble areas such as newborn babies, panning, sharpness, group pictures, and lighting issues. Bring your digital camera and get ready for hands-on instruction.
